Glycosylated haemoglobin (HbA1c) was measured from the buffy coat samples. Assays were performed in the International Organisation for Standardisation (ISO) 17025-accredited Wolfson Laboratories (
https://www.ctsu.ox.ac.uk/research/laboratories) of the Clinical Trial Service Unit and Epidemiological Studies Unit, using validated high-performance liquid chromatography methods
1 on HA-8180 analysers (Arkray, Inc.) with calibrators traceable to International Federation of Clinical Chemistry (IFCC) standards

Measurements were expressed in IFCC units of millimoles per mole; which has then been converted to Diabetes Control and Complications Trial (DCCT) glycated haemoglobin percentages by multiplying the number of millimoles per mole by 0.0915 and adding 2.153.
