Immediately post-collection, samples were placed in chilled insulated boxes and kept at a temperature of 4-10 degrees celsius. At the end of each day of recruitment, samples were sent to a central laboratory for refrigeration at 4 degrees celsius overnight. The following morning, samples were extracted and centrifuged, and plasma and buffy coat separated and stored in individual 1.8mL barcoded cryovials (Nunc A/S, Denmark) in -80 degrees celsuis freezers. The mean delay (at 4-10 degrees celsius) before separation was ~24 hours.
Samples were later transferred, by air freight in boxes over dry ice, for long term storage in Oxford (liquid nitrogen tanks at a temperature of -150 degrees celsuis).
