Trained nurses and doctors applied a standard protocol, which included a face-to-face standardised questionnaire, collection of a 10 mL non-fasting blood sample, measurement of anthropometry (height, weight, waist and hip circumferences), and measurement of systolic and diastolic blood pressure (using digital monitors [Model UA-767 Plus BT]). Further enhancements included bio-impedance, additional information on medical history, treatment for diabetes, diet, cognitive function, and in a subset from the latter part of the recruitment period, collection of 50 mL of urine.
Data were entered into password-protected electronic tablets (Samsung Galaxy 10.1), and linked to the participant questionnaire data collected. For quality control, screen-shots of the results screens were recorded, and random checks confirmed the accuracy of the data linkage.
