MCPS study participants are followed for cause-specific mortality through linkage to the national death registry (Sistema Estadistico de las Defunciones SEED). Linkage is based on name, age and place of death, and uses a Soundex probabilistic algorithm to match individuals to registry records. Field validation in a subset of ~7000 deaths confirmed the reliability of the matching algorithm in more than 95% of cases.
Follow-up for the study is currently complete to 30th September 2022, and the vital status known for over 98% of participants (Field 10000). The death certificate provides information on the date (Field 10001) and place of death (Field 10006), ICD-10 coded causes of death (main (Field 10002) and contributory (Field 10003)), and if the event was medically certified at the time of death (Field 10007). The ICD-10 attributed cause of death has been provided by Mexico (Field 10004). MCPS study clinicians reviewed death certificate information and, where needed, recoded the underlying cause of death (Field 10005) (for example, diabetes is accepted as the (Oxford) underlying cause of death only for deaths due to acute diabetic crises).
